The Foundations of Buddhism
Lead by Ven. Dr. Dhammadipa Sak
In this work, Rupert Gethin discusses the philosophical concepts and practices which constitute the common heritage of the different traditions of Buddhism, from the perspectives of both traditional beliefs and modern scholarship. This work is unique in capturing the mainstream ideas of different Buddhist traditions, and in providing further expositions of Buddhist cosmology, no self, dependent arising, the path of meditation, and the theoretical Abhidharma framework. It is a work that can be accessed by those without any prior knowledge of Buddhist concepts, and can be beneficial to those who are seasoned practitioners of Buddhism.
Ven. Dhammadipa is the Abbot of US Zen Institute and Wisdom Temple. He is a scholar of early Mahāyāna and Theravāda Buddhism specialized in the study of Sarvāstivāda Abhidharma and Theravāda Abhidhamma. Ven. Dhammadipa regularly instructs at meditation retreats and advocates the practice of Four Divine Abiding, for it improves relationships, antidotes negative mindset, and develops jhāna — which are highly compatible to modern daily lives.
